Toorama is a musical group specializing in the traditional polyphonic songs of the Erzyan, Mokshan, Shokshan and Karatai Mordvinians.
This group was formed in 1990, and of the four founding members two have continued and built up to the seven-member group we know today.
Toorama is, in fact, a combination of interests ranging from folk music researcher to pop-music artist. Toorama has concentrated on bringing you representative music of the Erzyan Mordvinian tradition.
The music performed by Toorama was initially collected in Erzyan villages, where this tradition is still thriving. Toorama"s repertoire also includes ceremonies, which are an increment part of the song performances. By presenting these entities the singers are able to pass this art on to their worldwide audience and forthcoming generations.
After the group was founded, other similar groups began emerdging, beyond the borders of the Mordovian Republic, as well. Today, there are even non-Mordvinian groups with Mordvinian folk music in their repertoire, for instance in Finland. To date, Toorama has participated in noteworthy folk music festivals in the Nordic countries and England. In 1994 they were determined the best folk music group in the Russian Federation.
